Why the Cavs signing Andrew Wiggins won’t mean much

Andrew Wiggins, the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft last month, is getting closer to signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but what happens after that is another matter.

One thing is certain: Wiggins’ future in Cleveland may not be as certain as a contract usually indicates.

Wiggins and the Cavs may have a deal in place this week for about $5.5 million, ESPN.com reports, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation about whether the Cavs are working on a deal to ship the former Kansas star to Minnesota for Kevin Love. The delay, according to Brian Windhorse, is related to the Cavs’ decision to first look into options for using their $1.4 million in salary-cap space. After signing Wiggins, they presumably would also sign LeBron James’ favorite free agent, Mike Miller. They may also make a move for free agent Ray Allen, but couldn’t offer him a very lucrative contract.

First, though, there’s the Wiggins issue for the Cavs. Once signed, the team must wait 30 days before trading him, although a deal could be reached and made official after the waiting period. No matter what, the NBA’s most dramatic offseason in memory goes on, especially if another team swoops in and makes the Wolves a better offer for Love.
