Christian and Samantha Ponder named their daughter after Bobby Bowden

Samantha Ponder, ESPN reporter and wife of Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder, recently gave birth to a baby girl. That girl’s name? Bowden Saint-Claire Ponder. “Saint-Claire” is Samantha’s middle name, and the “Bowden” part is an homage to Bobby Bowden, the legendary former coach of Florida State, where Christian starred in college.

According to a report in the St. Paul Pioneer-Press, Bowden (the coach) got the news about Bowden (the baby) from the Seminoles’ chaplain. It seems a bit odd that Bowden didn’t hear directly from his former quarterback, but in any event, he had this to say about it:

“I’ve never had a girl named after me. I’ve had everything else I can think of. I’ve had horses, I’ve had dogs, I’ve even had pigs. I’ve had a lot of things named after me but this is the first time I’ve had a girl, a daughter.’’

No word yet on how strongly the Ponders considered calling their daughter “Bobby.” As it happens, Christian’s coach in the NFL had been Leslie Frazier, but given that Ponder got benched a few times, it’s understandable that neither “Frazier” nor “Leslie” made the cut.

In any event, Frazier was fired and replaced by Mike Zimmer. So in the unlikely event that Ponder excels under his new coach — the Vikings appear ready to move forward with some combination of Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Cassel — and the Ponders have another daughter, I guess we can look forward to welcoming “Zimmer Ponder” into this world.

He previously had used 'Desmond Bieler' as his byline, but feels that shortening the first name to 'Des' nicely conveys his ever-decreasing gravitas. He also covers Fantasy Football.
