Pittsburgh Pirates sign Make-a-Wish kid to one-day-contract

No matter your team allegiance, you’ve got to respect the Pittsburgh’s Pirates latest signing — 12-year-old Matthew Beichner.

Beichner, who might be the Pirates’ biggest fan, is battling cancer, and his one wish was to meet Andrew McCutchen. But the Pirates, in conjunctions with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, did him one better — they signed him to a special one-day contract complete with what might be the most heartwarming press conference ever.

Along with the announcement of the latest signing by Pirates President Frank Coonelly, the team treated their newest star to a near-perfect day at PNC Park. Beichner broke bread with his idol McCutchen, attended batting practice and even got to throw out the first pitch, which went right over the plate like a pro.
