Enter the name of Jon Lester atop the list of “players who were scratched from lineups in a possible portent of a trade this week.”

Boston Red Sox Manager John Farrell made the announcement after the Sox lost their 59th game Tuesday night. “In light of all the uncertainty surrounding Jon Lester, it’s probably in everyone’s best interest that he does not make that start,” Farrell told reporters. “So Brandon [Workman] will be recalled [from Triple A]; there will be a corresponding move, roster wise, at some point tomorrow.”

Uncertainty…yes, that’s one word for it. Contenders want pitchers, especially this one. Although there’s been no hint of where Lester, who is 110-63 in 241 starts with Boston, will wind up when baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline arrives Thursday, there has been tons of buzz.

Add the Pittsburgh Pirates to that list, too.
