World No. 2 Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup in Toronto that starts Saturday and the Cincinnati Masters the following week because of a right wrist injury he suffered in practice Tuesday.

Tests found that there was “a small detachment of posterior sheath of the right ulnar wrist” in Nadal and that his wrist will be a cast for two to three weeks according to Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times.

“Unfortunately I injured my right wrist yesterday during practice and after the tests I have undergone today in Spain, including an MRI, and checking with my doctors, I will have to stay out of competition for at least 2-3 weeks,” Nadal said in a statement.

Nadal is the defending champion in both Masters 1000 events.

“I’m extremely disappointed that I am unable to defend my Rogers Cup title this year,” Nadal said in a statement released by Tennis Canada. “I was looking forward to coming there and playing again in Toronto as I have always loved to play in Canada and had great results in the past at a very important event.”

The Spaniard owns 14 Grand Slam titles, including winning a record ninth championship at the French Open this year, but fell in the fourth round of Wimbledon to Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios.

The Rogers Cup would have been his first tournament since Wimbledon.
