After 25 years and more than 500 matches — including the 2010 World Cup final — Howard Webb is retiring from refereeing and will become the technical director of the official referees’ association.
The 43-year-old Webb most recently officiated the World Cup knockout match between Brazil and Chile and has overseen some of the biggest matches in the sport, including Champions League finals.
In England, some fans have accused Webb of a pro-Manchester United bias, and predictably, the news was greeted with a plethora of Twitter jokes.
