Metta World Peace to play in China, change name to Panda Friend (UPDATE: it’s ‘The Pandas Friend’)

(Associated Press)

IMPORTANT UPDATE 2:04 P.M. THURSDAY:

We have a crucial clarification from the man himself.

ORIGINAL POST:

On Monday, Metta World Peace announced that he was signing with the Sichuan Blue Whales of the Chinese Basketball Association.

The Player Formerly Known as Ron Artest also dropped this little nugget.

Mr. World Peace has apparently made up his mind: He “intends to change his name to ‘Panda Friend’ in honor of his move to China,” China Daily reports.

Mr. Friend, 34, last was seen playing for the New York Knicks, who waived him in February, and then signing on as assistant girls’ basketball coach at Palisades High School in Southern California. He becomes the latest NBA cast-off to play in China after Stephon Marbury and Tracy McGrady.

After spending the first 17 years of his Post career writing and editing, Matt and the printed paper had an amicable divorce in 2014. He's now blogging and editing for the Early Lead and the Post's other Web-based products.
