‘Farmville’ app maker Zynga partners with Tiger Woods, NFL for new games

The makers of “Farmville,” the social game that practically requires players to annoy their Facebook friends by pleading with them to trade sheep or whatever, are venturing into a new topic. Zynga announced this week that it will team up with both the NFL and Tiger Woods to develop a series of (hopefully less intrusive) video games for mobile devices, USA Today reports.

The announcement of the new games comes amid news of steep drops in Zynga’s stock prices. The company reported that its bookings revenues fell more than 7 percent on Thursday, CNBC writes. The company’s the new games could help jump-start its finances and restore market confidence.

The first of the new sports-centric games will be based on Tiger Woods, and is set to launch in 2015. Zynga CEO Don Mattrick said (via USA Today):

“We perceive him to be the most iconic athlete in the world. When he’s participating and competing, everyone watches and pays attention.”

Zynga also signed a deal with the NFL and its Players Association. The first game in that lineup will be called “NFL Showdown,” which USA Today describes as “a manager-style mobile game in which players build out their rosters with real stars from NFL teams.”

“Sports are evergreen,” Mattrick said (via USA Today). “People love it, and I think we can bring something unique to the party.” Shareholders hope the games bring something profitable to their pockets.
