Chargers-49ers game still on after 6.1 earthquake in Bay Area

The NFL preseason game between the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers will be played as scheduled Sunday despite a strong earthquake that struck near Napa overnight.

“Levi’s Stadium was designed to meet California seismic code requirements and seismic bracing was incorporated into the design and construction,” the 49ers said in a statement. “Building engineers have walked the entire stadium and we have had no reported damage. We will continue to do so throughout the day.”

Levi’s Stadium, the brand-spankin’ new, $1.3-billion replacement for Candlestick Park, is just fine, but there may be some issues getting to the 1 p.m. PDT game, with some train service affected. (It will be televised by Fox.)

There also will be new turf on the Field of Jeans, after only one NFL game has been played on it. Coach Jim Harbaugh pulled his team off the turf, which was marked by divots from Sunday’s preseason game against Denver.

The last time a significant earthquake struck the area, a World Series game was in progress…at Candlestick.
