Jets suspend Dimitri Patterson after AWOL incident

The New York Jets have suspended cornerback Dimitri Patterson after a bizarre incident in which he disappeared from the team for 48 hours.

General Manager Idzik said that Patterson “will be suspended indefinitely and that will allow us to gather more information to what led to his behavior.”

Patterson wasn’t on the sideline for the Jets’ game Friday night against the New York Giants and the team had no clue why he was missing or where he was. Nor did his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, initially have any idea of his whereabouts. “Without putting an APB out, you’re trying everything you can,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “You’re trying all the numbers you have, you name it. … Obviously, as the game wore on, we still had a major concern.”

By Saturday, the team’s off-day, Idzik had confirmed that Patterson was all right, although he had no idea where Patterson was. On Sunday, Patterson didn’t show up for practice. He returned to the team’s facility on Sunday night.

On Monday, Patterson texted ESPN’s Josina Anderson: “Yes, I’m ok and I’m not going AWOL either. Comical.”

Patterson, 31, hadn’t played since early August because of leg injuries. He signed with the Jets in the spring after plying for the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins.
