With “30 Rock” having ended last year, Alec Baldwin had little reason to attend the 2014 Emmys on Monday. So instead he watched the Maria Sharapova-Maria Kirilenko match at the U.S. Open, where he appeared to reprise his role as Jack Donaghy. The actor, dressed in a suit, effortlessly caught a wayward ball as it bounced into the stands then confidently held it up for the audience to a round of applause

What a catch! The only thing that would make this scene better is if Donaghy, er, Baldwin was wearing a tuxedo. After all, it was after 6 p.m.

Baldwin, a longtime tennis fan, later talked about the catch to ESPN’s Pam Shriver. In a very un-Donaghy-like manner he said (via USA Today): “I don’t play tennis well, but I can catch a slow-moving tennis ball.” Clearly, the actual man is different from the one who created “MILF Island” that he played on TV.

Back to the actual sport of tennis, though, here’s what happened in the match: Fifth-seeded Sharapova beat fellow Russian and her ex-doubles partner Kirilenko, 6-4, 6-0, to move onto the next round.
