Over the weekend, a spate of racy photos, purportedly of Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities, found their way onto the internet and, while Lawrence’s name attracted most of the attention, one athlete quickly responded when she found her name listed in reports.

Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney, best known for winning medals and being the subject of G-rated internet memes, denied the authenticity of the photos and suggested that the perpetrator needs help from a higher power.

Oddly, this spawned some criticism, with one person tweeting to her: “Glad to see your life has been destroyed.” By Monday morning, Maroney, 18, was thanking those who were standing by her.

Goalie Hope Solo and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kate Upton also were among those purported to be in other pictures.
