Whether it was because of DeflateGate or just dynasty fatigue, a lot of folks did not want to see Patriots Coach Bill Belichick celebrating another Super Bowl victory. But it’s likely that even New England fans would have preferred not to have seen Belichick celebrating another Super Bowl victory by laying a big ol’ lips-to-lips smooch on his … daughter.
At least that seemed to be the predominant reaction on the Internet once a photo by Matt Slocum of the Associated Press, taken right after the Pats had beaten the Seahawks, began making the rounds.
Amanda Belichick, 30, is — go figure — also a head coach, of the Wesleyan women’s lacrosse team. According to an etiquette expert rounded up by the New York Daily News, the younger Belichick is well past the age at which such a kiss is appropriate in public.
“Adult parents should probably not be kissing their adult children on the lips, in public,” Elaine Swann told Daily News. “We are judged by the way be behave so we have to be mindful of how we’re perceived by others when we’re in a public place, no matter what you’re celebrating.” …
“Doing a quick bit of research on Bill here, his grandparents are from Croatia and the culture there, they’re very hands-on. Men kiss men. Women kiss women,” she said. “Here in the U.S. it can be seen as taboo; however, we have to remember that America is a melting pot of a ton of different cultures.”
Fair enough. Certainly, Bill Belichick’s press conferences give plenty of people the impression that he’s an emotionless, football-coaching android of some kind, so it’s nice to know that he has so much love for his family, and that a major event like a Super Bowl win can move him to a moment of great affection.
It’s just that no one really wanted to see the love that the coach has for his family shown in quite that way.
