Stephen A. Smith was helping out with the top 10 plays on “SportsCenter” when a clip of the Norway-Germany Women’s World Cup game came up. In it, Germany couldn’t stop a free kick by Norway’s Maren Mjelde. Smith made a dumb joke.

In case you can’t watch the video or ESPN had it taken down, Smith said Germany couldn’t stop the shot because “the might not want to mess their hair up.”

As Matt Yoder at Awful Announcing points out, Smith wanted to make sure everyone heard this joke because he said it twice.

Smith’s comments hardly are surprising: He was suspended by ESPN in the wake of the Ray Rice incident last July for suggesting women could avoid domestic-violence situations by not provoking their male counterparts. He also is a whole-hog supporter of Floyd Mayweather, who has served time for domestic-violence convictions.

What is surprising: ESPN continues to trot out Smith to talk about anything to do with women.

Anyway, can’t wait for Smith’s next joke about the female goalie who failed to stop the shot because she just had her nails done.
