Most television markets have a beloved sportscaster who generations of viewers have grown up watching.
Oklahoma City viewers have come to know and revere the name Bob Barry. Bob Barry Sr. grew up in Oklahoma, graduated from the University of Oklahoma and was handpicked by legendary Sooner football coach, Bud Wilkinson, to call the school’s football and men’s basketball games while also holding court at KFOR as main sports anchor and sports director for more than 40 years.
The elder Barry, who died in 2011 at the age of 80, handed off sports director duties to his son, Bob Barry Jr., who, like his dad, was born in Oklahoma, went to Oklahoma and called Oklahoma and Oklahoma State games.
Barry was killed in a car accident Saturday when the motor scooter he was driving collided with a car. A memorial service is planned for Friday in Oklahoma City.
In a testament to the younger Barry’s popularity, the general manager of a rival station, KOCO, has offered to staff the KFOR newsroom during the funeral so that more of KFOR’s personnel can attend.
