The start of the game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and St. Louis Rams was delayed because pregame pyrotechnics set the artificial turf on fire.
That’s right. Pregame pyrotechnics set the artificial turf on fire.

Oddly, instead of just whistling quietly and walking away toward Los Angeles from a flaming Edward Jones Dome, the Rams opted to play the game after a brief delay. The flambe Rams put out the fire and then addressed concerns that the foam and water would make for a slippery surface. Out came the Shop-Vacs and soon enough the game was underway.

The game started just before 1:30 p.m. EDT, with fairly minimal damage to the turf.
