Cam Newton gives TD ball to 6-year-old Panthers fan who had just lost his father

So, here’s a GIF of Carolina quarterback Cam Newton handing a football from a touchdown to a little Panthers fan.

This happened after Newton’s second-quarter TD on Sunday, and it’s a nice enough moment already — look at how happy that kid is — but also, consider this backstory, which comes via WSET, an ABC affiliate in Lynchburg, Va.

According to the station, the boy who ended up with the ball is Colin Toler, a 6-year-old whose dad died in September. Colin was at the Carolina–Green Bay game with his grandfathers, the station reports. Family friends had given them tickets.

According to WSET:

But when Cam Newton scored a one yard touchdown in the 2nd quarter, Colin saw him walking his way.
“I was like oh gosh, oh gosh,” Toler said. “Am I going to be on the big screen or am I going to be on TV? I was jumping up and down like ‘yeah!'”

For what it’s worth, Newton apparently didn’t know about what had happened with Colin and his father, WSET reported. But it was still a sweet gesture. Can we forget about the sign thing now?
