McDonald’s recently released an ad that, at first, must have caused Chicago fans great pain while bringing joy to Green Bay. In it, the ESPN analyst, who created an iconic look while wearing a “Bears” sweater vest en route to leading the team to their only Super Bowl title, dons a sweater bearing the name and colors of the arch-rival Packers.

The ad constituted a giant troll job for Bears Nation. (It also caused great confusion among viewers who wondered what happened to the fries that Ditka was holding while he was in the closet, but we digress.)

However, since that ad started airing, a funny thing has happened to the Packers. Well, it’s not that funny to Green Bay fans: their team hasn’t won a game.

Okay, the Pack has only played two games in that span, but it was 6-0 before then, and now it is 6-2. Coincidence? Or… the Curse of Ditka?

Now fans of the Bears, who have gone 1-1 in that span, are loving the ad and Packers partisans are cringing. What a country! For his part, Ditka had this to say to the Chicago Sun-Times:

“I had no problem at all putting it on,” Ditka said. “It’s a commercial. I thought it was kinda funny and and kinda cute. Frankly, if people were offended by that, then get a life. Com’on. It’s no big deal.
“I would say that I’ve honestly been more loyal to the Bears than they’ve been to me, so I don’t think I have to apologize to anybody if I dress up in a Packers sweater or Detroit Lions sweater or Minnesota Vikings sweater. I will not apologize to anyone for that.”

Yup, that sounds like Ditka, stridently unapologetic even to the fan base that reveres him like few others in Chicago sports history. Of course, if the Packers keep on losing, that will only cause the old coach to become even more legendary among Bears fans.
