Updated with Payton comment

On Monday afternoon, New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton said that defensive coordinator Rob Ryan remained on staff a day after his defense was lit up by the Washington Redskins.

Payton said that “absolutely” Ryan is still a member of his coaching staff and that he planned to meet with the team’s general manager. Alex Marvez of Fox Sports first reported that the Saints had opted to part with him.

The Saints have the last-ranked defense in the NFL and Kirk Cousins passed for four touchdowns, a week after Marcus Mariota did the same for the Tennessee Titans. Two weeks ago, Eli Manning passed for six touchdowns for the New York Giants.

The last time he was fired, by the Dallas Cowboys in 2013, the twin brother of Buffalo Bills Coach Rex Ryan promised he’d have “a new job in like five minutes.”
