New UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm is so polite that even when she meets A-list celebrities she follows standard protocol. Take, for instance, her visit to Las Vegas on Saturday, where she watched Canelo Alvarez beat Miguel Cotto in their middleweight boxing bout. While there, her newly found fame gained her entrance into the VIP viewing party, where rapper Jay Z and his wife — what’s her name? — were also in attendance.

“I met Jay Z and he says this is my wife and I say, ‘Oh, hi what is your name?’ That is what I do when I meet someone’s wife,” the 34-year-old fighter told Albuquerque, New Mexico’s KRQE this week. “As I am shaking her hand I am thinking ‘why did I just say that?’ ”

Probably because (unless you’re new to the planet) everyone knows Jay Z is married to Beyonce. You know, the superstar singer who doesn’t even require a last name. Holm, of course, knew this, which is why she quickly scolded herself for asking.

Luckily, Beyonce reportedly found Holm’s gaffe refreshing, according to KRQE. She told Holm not to worry about it.

Holm has been everywhere since she upset Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 earlier this month. From taking piano lessons with Jamie Foxx to hanging out with Floyd Mayweather at the Clippers-Warriors game last week, the humble athlete has had to make her way in a brand new world full of glitz, glamour and television appearances.

What she hasn’t done, however, is change her personality. She also hasn’t even let her win go to her head. While she admitted punching Rousey in the face was “satisfying” (she added the caveat that when you’re a trained boxer punching anybody in the face is satisfying), she remains a friendly person — she even stuck up for her rival who has faced immense criticism after being defeated.

Holm, who lives in Albuquerque with her husband and a couple of cats and a dog, wants to stay grounded, though everything around her has lifted off.

“My life has changed a little bit,” she said. “Hopefully everything will be somewhat normal at home.”
