Cam Newton had a memorable 2015 for many reasons. His biggest highlight, however, was probably when his son, Chosen, was born on Christmas Eve. (Second was probably leading the Carolina Panthers to a 15-1 regular season finish.)

After a several weeks of silence, the favorite for NFL MVP explained during a Friday news conference why he went outside the box when naming his son.

“I wanted something that would be masculine, but yet unique,” Newton told reporters Friday. “I’m not a big fan of juniors and every person that I’ve had this conversation when I say ‘I don’t want to have the pressure of him being a junior’, they reply, ‘What the hell do you think Chosen’s going to bring?’ ”

Newton also joked that he was going to take his son to the DMV to get his licence, is taking applications for prom dates and that Chosen already has scholarship offers.

“He texted me yesterday saying he wants to work out and do two-a-days. I have my hands full,” Newton added.

Newton also talked football on the Panthers’ final day of practice during their bye week; well, sort of.

“I’m not a big football fan outside of football,” Newton told reporters when asked if he’d watch the NFC playoff games Sunday. “I think being that my family and friends will be worried about what the score is, the game will be on. I’m not going to be particularly particular about the game. I know who and when they play. It’ll be a good gathering.”

He also addressed his practice attire Friday, which included what appeared to be sheer tights underneath cut-off football pants

“These are recovery stockings. Something like that,” Newton said. “It’s for your legs to recover. I figure if any day to recover, why not today and this whole weekend?”
