Football still might not be as global as futbol, but the American iteration of the sport seems to be picking up steam abroad. One Austrian broadcaster is so excited about Sunday’s AFC and NFC Championship games that it made a hype video mashing up the team rosters with “Star Wars” characters. It’s pretty brilliant.
Okay, so New England fans might not be too pleased to learn the team at Austria’s PULS 4 cast Tom Brady as Darth Vader, but considering Coach Bill Belichik kind of already resembles the Emperor in his trademark hoodie, it’s really the obvious choice.
Plus, if you ask some of the Denver Broncos, who are set to face Brady and Co. on Sunday, they’d agree the Patriots are the dark side.
“I hate everything about them,” defensive end Derek Wolfe told the Denver Post on Friday. “They’re always in my way. They’re always in my way to get what I want.”
Yikes. Broncos fans will hope Luke Skywalker, er, Peyton Manning will be able to use the Force.
Meanwhile, over in the NFC, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton gets stuck being a random Storm Trooper, while the Cardinals’ Carson Palmer gets to be Obi Wan Kenobi.
That one makes a little less sense at first, but considering Newton will be dealing with cold weather, an element The Washington Post’s Adam Kilgore says is a “rare adversary” of Newton’s, perhaps the “storm” part of the bit works after all.
The AFC Championship game between the Patriots and Broncos is scheduled to kick off at 3:05 on Sunday on CBS. The NFC game between the Panthers and the Cardinals is set to follow at 6:40 p.m. on Fox.
