Coach K apologizes for lying in postgame news conference

Dillon Brooks of the Oregon Ducks reacts late in the second half against Duke Thursday night.

The Duke basketball program and Coach Mike Krzyzewski issued a statement on Saturday afternoon, apologizing to Oregon Coach Dana Altman and forward Dillon Brooks for his remarks to the sophomore after Thursday night’s 82-68 loss in the Sweet 16.

“It is not my place to talk to another team’s player and doing so took the focus away from the terrific game that Dillon played,”Krzyzewski said in the statement. “I reacted inappropriately to a reporter’s question about my comment to Dillon.”

In the final seconds of the already decided contest, Brooks hoisted a shot from Steph Curry land to avoid a shot clock violation and found nothing but net. When Coach K and Brooks met in postgame handshake line, television cameras caught Krzyzewski telling Brooks, “you’re too good of a player to do that,” though he denied saying that in his postgame comments.

After audio of the original interaction was released, Krzyzewski had no option other than to admit his fib.
