Kobe Bryant has long since been a deity to Los Angeles Lakers fans, but never more so than now, in his final handful of games. Perhaps that explains the behavior of a couple in the stands Monday at Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City, where the Lakers took on the Jazz.
Well, it only explains why the man and woman, clad in Lakers jerseys, were so intent on grabbing a shooting sleeve Bryant tossed into the crowd during the fourth quarter. As for the fact that they took turns smelling the game-worn garment? Well, that’s just weird, and kind of gross.
It seems possible that Bryant was trying to throw his sleeve directly to those two fans, given how visible they were in their Kobe gear. (Let’s cut him slack, in that case, for coming up short on the toss — hey, that’s why he’s retiring.)
The fans, understandably, would be ecstatic to come away with such a precious piece of memorabilia from their idol. But proceeding to drink in his sweaty aroma? Eww.
Then again, in a season full of swings and misses by the 15-59 Lakers, what’s one more whiff?
