In the 32nd minute of Tuesday’s Copa America semifinal match, U.S. fans were presented with a conundrum: to lament a goal by Argentina’s Lionel Messi that put their side in a near-fatal 2-0 hole or to simply bask in the greatness they had seen.

Such was the quality of Messi’s strike, a free kick from well outside the penalty area that curled left to right, bending over the wall and just past goalkeeper Brad Guzan, finding an impossibly tight spot in the upper corner of the net. It was the Barcelona superstar’s 55th goal for his national team, an Argentina record, and it was a thing of utter beauty.

A shot like that just can’t be viewed enough. So let’s take another look, shall we?

How about a Spanish-language version of the call?

There was just nothing at all Guzan could do about it. Meanwhile, the Internet erupted with rapturous reactions. Or to put it another way, online observers were wowed.

Messi added two assists, one on an unselfish play where it appeared he could easily have tallied his second goal, as Argentina thrashed the U.S., 4-0, to move to the Copa America final against the winner of Wednesday’s Colombia-Chile match. Meanwhile, the USMNT is set for the third-place game, knowing that it was simply outclassed Tuesday night.
