When George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” I doubt he was thinking of baseball uniforms, but nonetheless, here we are.
The warm-up uniforms for the 2016 MLB All-Star Game draw inspiration from the 1978 San Diego Padres uniforms. But there isn’t much good that can come from the 1978 uniforms, considering the uniforms are considered among the ugliest in sports. Sports Illustrated has them in its top 30 list of ugliest uniforms in sports history. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has them among the 13 worst baseball uniforms in history.
What do the 2016 renditions look like? Well. Not much better.
And folks on Twitter aren’t too thrilled about it.
Luke Kerr-Dineen from For the Win thinks they look like cheese.
I think he’s being nice. I’m more aligned with David.
Regardless of what they look like, they’re terrible.
And of course, the MLB Shop has them for sale. It’s $109.99 for a regular warm-up jersey (no player information on the back) and $134.99 for a customize-able jersey.
Something tells me these aren’t going to sell very well, though some are saying they are so bad that they’ll buy one.
Eh. I’ll pass.
