Here’s how you know the NFL season cannot possibly get here soon enough: The NFL Network has released its annual list of the top 100 players.

Generally, this elicits some grousing from the men who play professional fubball for a living and this year is no exception — except there’s a wrinkle. One player thinks he’s ranked too high. That would be Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers quarterback who was, you know, the NFL’s MVP last season. He can name at least two other guys he thinks should be No. 1.

“[Tom] Brady or J.J. [Watt],” Newton told NFL.com.

Brady finished second and Watt was third, so Newton is free to argue, rightly, about any of the top three. He didn’t stop there, either. He went straight to No. 4, Antonio Brown, and others.

“Even [Antonio Brown],” Newton said. “You know Julio [Jones] is special. Luke [Kuechly] is Luke. I think that’s what makes football so cool is just that it may not be a unanimous number one ever because you go in different regions, certain people may feel a certain type of way and I’m cool with that.”

All righty then.

Training camps open next week.
