Swedish equestrian Peder Fredricson won the silver medal in Friday’s individual jumping final, but the 44-year-old father of three deserved a gold for his podium celebration.
Fredricson hit the dab.
The dance move, which even its creators declared passé in June after Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said he would no longer use it to celebrate touchdowns, is either officially dead (again) or about to make a comeback, if only on the equestrian circuit.
The Swedish tabloid Expressen reports that Fredricson performed the dab at the request of his three sons, including Hjalmar, who hits the dab to celebrate goals in soccer. (The story mentions that the celebration was made famous by the likes of Manchester United star Paul Pogba.)
“So [Hjalmar] said, ‘Dad, if you come up on the podium, you must do it,’ ” Fredricson’s wife, Lisen, told Expressen.
The headline beneath the photos above translates roughly to: “They wanted dad to do that.”
