From the people who played baseball with him to those who watched from other pro sports to those who covered him for a living, Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was remembered as a talented, loving family person after his death early Sunday morning in a Miami boating accident.

Chipper Jones, a former Atlanta Braves player, said there were “no words to describe the sickness and sadness I feel” and ESPN’s Peter Gammons remembered Fernandez’s Cuban grandmother, Olga, to whom the pitcher was especially close.

Keith Olbermann remembered Fernandez as a man who succeeded in defecting from Cuba on his third try — and had to save his mother when she fell off the boat along the journey from Cuba to Florida.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, a former baseball player himself, posted to Instagram:
