Donald Trump drew a record crowd for a speech at the arena in Loveland, Colo., on Monday and, this being Denver Broncos country, a high-profile supporter said a few words on his behalf.

“We need leadership for our country,” said Mike Shanahan, who won two Super Bowls with the team. “We need leadership for our kids.”

Trump returned the compliment, calling John Elway, who won those Super Bowls as a quarterback and last year’s as the team’s top executive a “winner.”

Sounds about right.

This being Shanahan, for whom things went poorly with the Washington Redskins and Robert Griffin III, there was a bit of snark.

Last summer, Shanahan, who has not coached since being fired by the Redskins after the 2013 season, hosted a fundraiser for Trump along with MillerCoors executive Peter Coors at Shanahan’s Denver home. According to the Denver Post reports, it cost “at least $10,000 per couple” to attend and $50,000 got couples a photo and VIP meeting with Trump.

Shanahan has deep ties to the GOP. He attended rallies for George W. Bush as well as his 2005 inauguration. His daughter, Krystal, and Bush’s daughter, Jenna, met in college and are former roommates.
