As difficult as it may be to imagine, there’s something bigger looming in 2017 for Derek Jeter than the ceremony in which the New York Yankees will retire his No. 2.

The legendary former shortstop is going to be a dad.

His wife, Hannah, broke the news on Jeter’s Players’ Tribune that she is pregnant with the couple’s first child, a daughter. Hannah reports that Jeter has a name picked out (Torre has a nice ring to it), but she wasn’t sharing that. The impending birth and May 14 ceremony had her thinking:

Whatever her name is, I know she’ll run circles around him.
We want our kids’ lives to be as “normal” as possible. They’re going to be born into such an extraordinary situation. They’re going to have to be some strong little people. We don’t want them to be defined by their dad’s name — for them, we want him to just be “Dad.” That will be the piece of him they’ll have that the rest of the world doesn’t. It will be special, and it will be theirs.
Still, though, I want them to know Derek Jeter. I feel some sadness — and Derek must as well — thinking about how our children will never get to experience that time in his life. We can show them videos, and photos, and memorabilia — I already can’t wait to show them footage of that last night at the Stadium. But I know it won’t be quite the same. I’ll tell them myself: You had to be there.

Jeter, who will turn 43 in June, retired in 2014 and married Hannah last July. In 2014, he told People that he looked forward to fatherhood but admitted that being an uncle had its benefits. “You can get rid of them when you want to get rid of them!” he joked.

As for the baby, his wife says Jeter “has a name in mind — he’s set on it.”

Maybe they’ll make like Costanza and name the child “Two.”

Already, the Internet is having some fun.
