Dolphins apparently aren’t the only thing that make former Hootie & the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker cry. The die-hard South Carolina fan, who followed the Gamecocks’ Sweet 16 win over Baylor on Friday via TV monitors along the front of the stage where he and former bandmate Mark Bryan were playing a concert in Charleston, S.C., was in the stands at New York’s Madison Square Garden for Sunday’s Elite Eight game against Florida.

After the No. 7 seed Gamecocks completed a 77-70 win over No. 4 seed Florida to clinch their first trip to the Final Four, Rucker, who was born and raised in Charleston, shook his head in disbelief and wept openly.

The Rucker/Hootie & the Blowfish puns flowed just as easily. This was “History in the Making” for Coach Frank Martin’s squad and South Carolina fans, including Rucker. So let him cry, if the tears fall down like rain. Let him sing, if it eases all his pain…

After South Carolina’s win, Rucker relayed a conversation he had with some of his college friends before the game.

“We were like, ‘Man, we’re in the Garden, watching the Gamecocks play to go to the Final Four.’ If you had told me that 10 years ago, I would’ve told you you were on on crack, you know? And here we are. Being in the Garden for this made it even more special.”
