“I really believe it’s going to happen this year,” John Kavanagh told Fox Sports in Australia on Wednesday.
The Irish gym owner declined to get more specific, but said the only holdup has been because “there are a lot of fingers in the pie,” including different promotions, commissions and other organizations that no doubt will want to capture a part of the fight’s purported record-breaking revenue potential. (Both Mayweather and McGregor has said they would expect $100 million payouts for the fight.)
Despite the uncertainty, however, Kavanagh said McGregor is exclusively training for the potential boxing match and not a mixed martial arts fight.
“I said a quote that was kind of taken out of context that it’d be simpler training for boxing and what I mean by that is boxing is one of the 10 skills you need for mixed martial arts,” Kavanagh said, referring to a comment he made in January. “Now we’re only doing boxing so we can drop wrestling and jiu jitsu and Thai boxing. We can just focus on the boxing, so of course we’re getting ready to fight arguably one of the best defensive boxers of all time.”
“Let the people in the suits worry about the paperwork,” he added. “We’re training for it.”
Kavanagh is in Australia to promote a book, as well as open a new gym. Meanwhile, McGregor’s been jetsetting around the world, including making stops in New York and Los Angeles to “attend to various aspects of business,” according to his website The Mac Life.
One of those stops included an acting gig to promote the Netflix series “Iron Fist,” based on a Marvel comic. The star gave a sneak peek of the action behind the scenes earlier this week.
McGregor was also recently in his native Ireland, where he attended a baby shower with his pregnant partner Dee Devlin. The couple is expecting their first child next month.
McGregor also appears to have been spending a good amount of time with his young nephew Harry.
