After weeks of rumors, the University of Tennessee has reportedly fired coach Butch Jones, the day after the football team’s 50-17 loss to Missouri.
Jones had coached the Vols for five seasons, but never could reach the level of success the team attained in the 1990s and could not establish a foothold in the SEC, going 14-24. Over his five seasons, Jones had a 34-27 record and is 4-6 (0-6 in the SEC) this season. The team is in danger of missing a bowl game for the first time since Jones’s first season. His firing was first reported by Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Feldman. Tennessee defensive line coach Brady Hoke has been tabbed as interim coach, according to ESPN.
