No sooner did her match end, though, than Ertz was apprised of the 38-7 rout of Minnesota that sent her husband to a Super Bowl matchup with the Patriots. She immediately buried her face in her hands, then shared her elated emotions with teammates.
Julie Ertz, 25, told ESPN that she and her husband had been texting each other right up until the moment they were no longer allowed to Sunday, and although she tried not to look at the score of the Eagles’ game, at halftime some people offered her a “smile as if they knew something.” She added, “I’m so excited for them — unbelievably excited.”
Zach Ertz, 27, did not see his wife’s reaction until he was offering his own postgame comments, when a reporter showed it to him on her phone. He then shed tears at the sight of his wife’s display in San Diego, where the USWNT’s game took place.
“Oh, man, that’s emotional for me,” said the Pro Bowl selection, who led his team Sunday with eight catches for 93 yards. “I wish she was here, obviously. It’s tough not having her here, but I can’t wait for her to get home and celebrate with me.”
Julie Ertz, nee Johnston, and her husband were married in March, after getting engaged the previous year. Zach Ertz’s proposal came at the baseball stadium at his alma mater, Stanford, where they met in 2012.
Less than a week before their wedding, the soon-to-be Ertzes posed for ESPN the Magazine’s Body issue. “The one place we’re never truly competing is while working out,” Zach Ertz told ESPN. “It’s more encouragement or just holding each other accountable — little coaching points here and there — because we know how serious the other is while the other is working out.”
“In a time of doubt, it’s nice to have someone who’s on your side, pushing you,” she said. “A big moment when Zach was there for me was before the World Cup. I didn’t make the [qualifying games] roster, and that was a hard moment. Him being a professional athlete as well, he understands those up-and-down moments.”
In contrast to the Body issue shoot, Sunday saw Zach and Julie Ertz bare their emotions, and for particularly joyous reasons.
