We’ve known for a while that Gisele Bündchen wants her husband, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, to retire. He said so himself last February in an interview with Sirius/XM radio after he led New England past the Atlanta Falcons for his fifth Super Bowl title.
“If it was up to my wife, she would have me retire today,” Brady said. “She told me that last night three times. And I said, ‘Too bad, babe, I’m having too much fun right now.’ You know, I feel like I can still do it. If you love what you do and you’re capable of doing it, then I might be so bored if I wasn’t going out there knowing that I could still do it. So I’m going to work hard to be ready to go, and I still plan on playing for a long time.”
Bundchen kept up her campaign as last year wore on, according to Brady pal Jay Feely. The MMQB’s Greg Bishop relates this tale in his wrap-up of the Patriots’ AFC championship game win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday:
Last spring Brady and his family vacationed with retired kicker Jay Feely, a close friend from their college days at Michigan. This being Brady, Feely prefers not to disclose the locale, but he does share that Brady’s wife, the supermodel Gisele Bündchen, spent time on that trip “trying to get me to convince [Tom] to stop playing.” And, Feely adds, “she was dead serious.”
Feely says he looked at his friend and told him, “Play as long as you can.” Brady smiled back and winked.
“For years he wanted to prove he belonged in this league,” Feely says. “He won three Super Bowls and still used perceived slights to motivate himself. And he’s still finding ways to motivate himself.”
In October 2015, Brady mused about playing “maybe 10 more years” and has extolled the benefits of his TB12 lifestyle and fitness program as a way to make that happen (though his partner in that endeavor allegedly has caused some consternation among his teammates and coaches). Given her comments about the concussions Brady has suffered over the years, this probably isn’t what she wants to hear.
“I just have to say, as a wife, I’m a little bit — as you know, it’s not the most, like, let’s say, unaggressive sport, right?” she said on “CBS This Morning” in May. “Football, like he had a concussion last year. He has concussions pretty much. I mean, we don’t talk about — he does have concussions. I don’t really think it’s a healthy thing for your body to go through, through that kind of aggression, like, all the time. That cannot be healthy for you, right? I’m planning on him being healthy and doing a lot of fun things when we’re like 100, I hope.”
