Discussing the Borges situation Friday on the WEEI radio show he co-hosts with Glenn Ordway and Lou Merloni, Fauria decided that it would be funny to read the text messages sent to Borges from Fake Don Yee with a stereotypical Asian accent, which is horribly racist.
“I’m gonna be Don Yee,” Fauria says as he begins. “For me, I don’t know why, Don Yee sounds like an Asian guy.”
Fauria then reads the texts with a bad Asian accent, his co-hosts laugh and Asian-sounding music eventually starts playing (Deadspin has the audio if you absolutely have to listen to it).
Late Friday night, WEEI announced that it had suspended Fauria for five days.
“Earlier today during his show, Christian Fauria impersonated athlete agent, Don Yee in an insensitive and ill-conceived attempt at humor,” WEEI said in a statement. “We regret Christian’s commentary and we apologize to Mr. Yee and those offended by the segment. We do not support or condone Christian’s comments, and we have suspended him for five days effective immediately.”
Fauria himself also apologized on Twitter.
Don Yee does not have an Asian accent. He was born and raised in California.
WEEI already was on shaky ground with Brady, the most beloved athlete in Boston since Larry Bird. During the run-up to last weekend’s Super Bowl, he told the station he would be reconsidering his weekly on-air appearances after one of its hosts called his 5-year-old daughter an “annoying little pissant” after her appearance in Brady’s documentary series.
The host, Alex Reimer, was suspended for 15 days, three times as long as Fauria.
