Michelle Obama casually jaunted into a classroom at John Burroughs Elementary School in Northeast Washington wearing a three-quarters sleeved baseball-style blouse.

A young boy jumped from his seat and ran into her arms while his classmates squealed at the unexpected sight of the first lady in their cooking class. Obama made surprise visits Feb. 25 to Burroughs and Watkins elementary schools to see students cooking with produce they grew in their school gardens.

And well, kids say the darndest things.

One student asked her if she knew Vice President Biden. “I do know who Joe Biden is. Do you know who Joe Biden is?” Obama responded.

When Obama was cooking with the students and commented that she had never made tortillas this way before, a boy working alongside her said, “I’ve never seen you before.” “I’ve never seen you before,” the first lady responded, outdoing the emphasis the student had placed on “you.”

Obama — who has led healthy eating and fitness initiatives during her tenure through her Let’s Move campaign — is traveling around the country in the spring visiting home gardens.

Michelle Obama looks to the future of “Let’s Move”

“You guys have this amazing garden, and I’m so proud of you. And I want the world to see all the great things you are doing and all the great things you are learning so much from your garden and from your school,” Obama told the class at Watkins.
