The Falls Church City school board has tapped the current head of nearby Fairfax City schools to be  its next superintendent.

Peter Noonan will leave Fairfax City in mid-May to take over Falls Church City schools, a small, affluent district that serves about 2,700 students. Noonan succeeds Toni Jones, who left the district in the fall to be the superintendent of schools in Fairfield, Conn.

Noonan began his career in New Mexico and moved in Virginia in 2001. He served as principal of Fairfax City’s Lanier Middle School and held various roles with Fairfax County Public Schools, rising through the ranks and ending his tenure as the assistant superintendent of the instructional services department. He was hired to head Fairfax City schools, a school system of about 4,800 students, in 2012.
