LaMarcus Aldridge scores 89 points in two NBA playoff games, joins elite group

LaMarcus Aldridge is now in an exclusive club that consists of Michael Jordan, Jerry West, Allen Iverson and Tracy McGrady. According to Elias Sports Bureau, those are the only five players to score 89 points or more in the first two games of an NBA playoff series in the last 50 years.

Aldridge exploded for back-to-back 40-point games on the road against the Houston Rockets to lead Portland to a 2-0 series lead.

“These two games here are as well as I’ve seen him play,” Blazers Coach Terry Stotts said.

Every series is now through two games in the 2014 playoffs, and only three entire starting frontcourts — the LeBron James-led Heat, the Kevin Durant-led Thunder and the Dwight Howard-led Rockets — have scored more than Aldridge’s 89 points. (The Wizards’ Marcin Gortat, Nene and Trevor Ariza have matched his 89 points.)

But despite Aldridge’s output, Portland’s starting front court — which also includes Robin Lopez and Nicolas Batum — ranks second in points scored this postseason.

“LaMarcus Aldridge killed us once again,” Houston guard James Harden said. “Game 3 is our season.”
