Richard Sherman is not worth more than $12 million per year

Jason La Canfora writes the Seahawks are prepared to make Sherman the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback, surpassing Darrelle Revis’ $12 million paycheck from the New England Patriots for 2014.

“Whatever they feel I am due, I will take it as respect,” Sherman told NFL.com. “It’s all about respect in this game, and the only way people respect is the dollars.”

Sherman ranked first among all cornerbacks this past season with eight interceptions and held opposing quarterbacks to a league-low 47.3 rating on passes to receivers he was covering. To put that in perspective, JaMarcus Russell posted a 50 rating in 2009, completing 48.8 percent of his passes for 1,287 yards and an 11/3 INT/TD ratio.

In 2012, quarterbacks posted a 40.5 rating to passes with Sherman in coverage and the season before that it was 57.3, so clearly he is good at his craft. But is he worth $12 million per year or more?

According to Pro Football Focus, just 11 cornerbacks – including Sherman – have kept opposing quarterbacks to a sub-50 rating in the past seven seasons. Only Charles Woodson (2007 and 2008), Darrelle Revis (2009 and 2011) and Sherman (2012 and 2013) have done it twice. None have done it three times. So while it is likely Sherman, 26, will continue to have an impact, history says that impact will be lower than the past two seasons. And certainly not worth more $12 million per year.
