It’s official: President Obama on Monday afternoon announced his selections of former Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel to run the Defense Department and counterterrorism adviser John O. Brennan as director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Obama described Hagel as “the leader that our troops deserve” and a “champion of our troops” and of military veterans and families. He said of Brennan that the CIA “will have the leadership of one of our nation’s most skilled and respected intelligence professionals.”
