The Washington Navy Yard, the oldest military installation in the nation, is home to several major Navy commands and other offices, including the Naval Sea Systems Command, where Monday’s shooting is believed to have taken place. About 16,000 employees, both civilian and military, work at the yard.
It is home to the Navy’s top officer, Adm. Jonathan Greenert, the chief of Naval Operations, who like his predecessors lives in the Yard’s historic Tingey House.
The Navy Yard is also home to the National Museum of the U.S. Navy, which is open to the public. This summer, the Navy ran a trial program allowing easier public access to the museum by using the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. The trial ended after Labor Day.
