Federal employees donated considerably less to last year’s Combined Federal Campaign, an annual charity drive for the government workforce.
Contributions to the program dropped by nearly 19 percent last year, and the number of participants fell by about 23 percent during that time. Overall, the CFC raised about $210 million in 2013, compared to $258 million in 2012, while participation declined from 848,000 employees to 650,000 over the same period.
Some employees have told us that the time to sign up was during last year’s government shutdown, which forced many workers to stay home without pay – although the donation period lasted beyond the shutdown period. Others say the three-year pay freeze from 2011 through 2013 affected their decisions.
