The Washington Redskins will release running back Tim Hightower, a person with knowledge of the situation said.

Entering training camp, some regarded Hightower as the favorite to begin the season as the team’s starter at tailback. But he was slowed at times as he returned from the knee injury that cut short his 2011 season. And rookie Alfred Morris, a sixth-round draft choice in April, emerged to join second-year pros Evan Royster and Roy Helu in the team’s tailback mix.

Hightower ran for 321 yards in five games for the Redskins last season. He has 2,054 rushing yards in four NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and Redskins.

The deadline for NFL teams to reduce their rosters to 53 players each comes at 9 p.m. Friday.
