Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that linebacker London Fletcher, the team’s captain, is nursing a strained hamstring and the Redskins won’t know about his playing status until later this week.
Shanahan said that contrary to a newspaper report, wide receiver Pierre Garcon does not have a torn tendon in his injured toe, only inflammation. The receiver continues to be monitored.
Shanahan declined to discuss what went wrong on the game-winning 77-yard touchdown pass that safety Madieu Williams and cornerback Josh Wilson surrendered Sunday against the New York Giants. But he said he is happy with the way defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and secondary coach Raheem Morris are preparing players each week.
Shanahan said a number of factors – including injuries on defense – have led to breakdowns on big pass plays by opponents.
Shanahan didn’t believe that Tyler Polumbus was guilty of the leg whip penalty he was called for in the first half. That call negated a run by Alfred Morris that would have given the Redskins a first down at the Giants’ 13-yard-line.
Shanahan said that long-snapper Nick Sundberg, who broke his arm in a game Sept. 9, has been cleared to practice Wednesday when the team returns to Redskins Park.
