Redskins coaches used bye week to begin preparations for Thanksgiving game

The Washington Redskins will play two games four days apart beginning when they host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at FedEx Field.

That game is followed by a Thanksgiving meeting with the Cowboys in Dallas on Thursday.

With that quick turnaround, Redskins coaches used the team’s bye week last week to begin making preparations to face the Cowboys.

“We took a couple days and just looked at Dallas. …On a short week, you have the opportunity to do that if you have the bye before. It not, it makes it pretty tough,” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday.

Shanahan said his players will focus strictly on the Eagles this week, with no preparations being made with them for the Cowboys game until next week.

Those in the Redskins organization also spent last week’s bye week evaluating their own team’s players and schemes, Shanahan said.

“You look at your personnel,” he said. “You go back and you evaluate the players and look at your scheme. You take a look at the things you’ve done poorly and you try to correct them. Obviously I’m not going to go through all the details of the things that we’re going to work on. But it’s been a good, productive week.”

Shanahan said after Monday’s practice he thought his players were re-energized upon returning from the bye.

“I think everybody was refreshed and I think they’re looking forward to the second half of the season,” Shanahan said. “You can see they were a lot fresher, rejuvenated and hopefully ready to go.”
