Redskins sign DB Jerome Murphy to take Brandon Meriweather’s roster spot

The Washington Redskins have signed free-agent defensive back Jerome Murphy, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed.

A second-year pro out of South Florida, Murphy spent time with the Saints and Lions earlier this season.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Murphy can play both safety and cornerback, but the Redskins plan on using him as a corner initially. He fills the roster spot created now that Washington will place safety Brandon Meriweather on injured reserve with a torn ACL.

For his career, Murphy has recorded 33 tackles and one interception in 14 games. He worked out for Washington last week.
