Redskins promote rookie T Tom Compton to 53-man roster

The Redskins have promoted rookie tackle Tom Compton to their 53-man roster after the South Dakota product spent the first 13 weeks of the season on the practice squad.

Selected in the sixth round of this April’s draft, Compton worked primarily at left tackle during the preseason and started the final preseason game. During regular season practices, he has taken snaps at left and right tackle.

When the Redskins placed cornerback Cedric Griffin on the Reserve/Suspension list, it created a spot on the 53-man roster, and the team used it to promote the 6-foot-5, 308-pound Compton.

“I just liked the way he has handled himself,” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said. “After losing Cedric, we felt like he has earned the right to be on our football team and a part of our group. I think he has a big-time future for us.”

Compton had generated some interest from other teams about signing him off Washington’s practice squad earlier this season. But he continued to wait for his shot with the Redskins. (As a practice squad member, Compton earned well below the league minimum and didn’t travel with the Redskins to road games). Compton will continue to compete in practice in the hope of making the 46-man game-day roster as a backup to Trent Williams and Tyler Polumbus.

“It’s really exciting. Just working hard all year, and now I get the opportunity, so I’m really excited about it,” Compton said. “Knowing they see me work hard and they think I can handle that position, I’m pretty proud of that. I’ve gotten so much better at everything. … I’ve gotten better at adjusting to the talent and the speed, and different protections. Just grown by leaps and bounds.”

The Redskins also announced Wednesday that they have signed defensive back Korey Lindsey and linebacker Kourtnei Brown to their practice squad.

Cincinnat drafted the 5-foot-10, 194-pound Lindsey in the seventh round of the 2011 draft out of Southern Illinois. He spent time with the Cardinals and Colts, but didn’t appear in any games.

The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Brown signed with San Francisco out of Clemson as an undrafted rookie last spring. He was released in August.
