Robert Griffin III inactive, Rex Grossman to back up Kirk Cousins

Robert Griffin III (John McDonnell/The Washington Post)

For the first time this season, Rex Grossman will suit up for the Washington Redskins on game day, serving as the backup to Kirk Cousins, who will start in place of Robert Griffin III.

Griffin is inactive. The Redskins determined that the risk of him further injuring his right knee is too great for him to play against the Browns. Griffin had made progress from the right knee he suffered against the Ravens in three consecutive days of practice.

Also inactive for the Redskins are kick returner Brandon Banks, wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe, offensive linemen Tom Compton, Josh LeRibeus and Adam Gettis and linebacker Roddrick Muckelroy.
